Comeback sends Pride 16s to state title – Mattoon Journal Gazette

PEORIA – The Mattoon Pride won its second straight 16-and-under NSA state softball championship Sunday night.
A 6-3 win over the Quad City Firebirds capped a 5-0 run through the double-elimination tournament after the Pride earned the No. 1 seed with two pool play wins. The big game came when the Pride scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-4 comeback win over the Midwest Sluggers. Trailing 4-3 with two outs and two strikes and bases empty in the seventh, the Pride got a hit by Kayla Jacobs followed by a game-tying double to the fence by Melanie Sparks. Kalli Gosser singled in the go-ahead run and then Katie Lange retired the side in order in the seventh inning for the win. Next, the Pride used a seven-run fourth inning to beat the White Sox Softball Academy 7-2 as Kacey Starwalt pitched the win. Lange was the winning pitcher, Alli Tarrant had a triple and a single and Shelby Tate and Jasie McMechan had two hits each in the championship win over Quad City.
